MCW: Best Sports Movie

Finally an opportunity to insert Burt Reynolds into a MCW. Because, let's face it, he's not likely to come up in any "best ofs" unless the category is "best compound bow kill shot of creepy country inbred buggerer".

I would be excommunicated out of the Peach State if I didnt choose "The Longest Yard" as my best sports movie. It was filmed at the Georgia State Pen - a former cotton farm prison down in Reidsville - with an awesome opening scene car chase filmed in Savannah and Brunswick. Actual prisoners in the Pen were used as extras to be on the Mean Machine team, headed by Burt, a former Florida State football player.

It's the classic set-up: corrupt warden (played by Eddie Albert of Green Acres fame) offers prisoner early release to throw football game between convicts and prison guards. The hero finds his soul along the way and trades freedom for integrity.

This clip, coming in at a merciful 31 seconds, shows how our disgraced point shaving football "hero" starts off a string of bad behavior that lands him in prison to begin with: roughs up girlfriend, steals her car (which he says he has earned it, presumably for putting up with her shite) drives car off bridge, and beats up cops.

It's just a good old fashioned violent, extremely un-PC movie from a time before the movie industry, and the US in general, became a bunch of over-groomed geldings. Enjoy and

Gobble Gobble!

I knew you would pick this movie. Grrrrrl, Reynolds was indeed most hot, but that suit has got to go. And if I were his girlfriend? I would have shot him. Just sayin' . . .

Happy MCW!

heifer: oh, i dunno, maybe because Chickory has a freaking shrine to him on her sidebar? LOL - this was before the tragic face lift, you understand.

moi: actually i believe he went to prison for this suit! grrrrrhahahaha. yeah i understand about the girlfriend thing...however, neither of us is likely to pay a washed up football player to be the arm upon which we drape ourselves.

Karl: i just tried to write out how to do it and it linked even though it was broken. I will send you and buzz a note on how to do it.

Oh yeah - this was an obvious choice, one i am sure no one posted because they knew K9 would post it for Chickory. Thoughtful dog.

Have a blessed thanksgiving.

Princess: young burt reynolds was a very hot high test male back in the day. you just dont see guys like this in cinema anymore. he ruined his looks like a lot of actresses have. Just go with it people! age gracefully for God's sake.

happy MCW

You gotta love the leisure suit and the Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is probably my favorite Burt Reynolds movie (next to Hooper - yeah, I know). All the scenes with the inmates practicing and playing were funny as hell. I hated the Adam Sandler remake.

Happy MCW!

Oh yes, Burt at his cocky best. And probably a favorite role for him too. I saw this listed on some favorite sports movies lists and thought of you!

If I played center on a prison football team, I would insist that every play be run out of the shotgun.
