2) On Republican's tendency towards self-flagellation regarding the recent past and it's "big spending". Some facts. During the 6 years that the Bush RINO was President and Republicans held a razor-thin majority in Congress.
A) Non-defense discretionary spending growth never exceeded GDP growth. Never. Not Once. It will be 5 to 9x GDP this year under the Traitor-Democrat-Party-Of-Filth.
B) The Traitor-Democrat-Party-Of-Filth was hardly powerless during those 6 years. 5 of the 10 largest Senate pork-barrellers during those years were veteran Democrat career politicians. 6 of the 10 largest House pokers were veteran democrat career politicians. If you take the State of Alaska out of the equation, a whopping 78% of Congressional Pork was procured by Traitor Democrats during the period the Republicans "ran everything".
3) Fishy is dead-right in pointing out the roles that Traitor-Democrat-Party-Of-Filth Leaders like Dodd, Schumer and Franks played in the Fannie and Freddie Mortgage Scandal. I'd add that the CEOs of Fannie and Freddie during the time that Republicans "ran everything" were Traitor-Democrats, as well.
4) We DO have a one-party Government at the Federal Level right now. We did NOT have a one-party Government at ANY point during the Bush Years.

I see a lot of people here who are talking about pride and earning things through work but it's hard to do when there isn't any. Not everyone who's in a mess right now was asking for it or behaving badly. The banks, yes, but all these people getting laid off don't don't deserve to get stomped on.
Having worked myself out of not having a place to live I understand this and I also understand that there is a stigma about accepting help or a handout. But I learned that worrying about stigma, pride and all that other stuff was not an option when you're 2 seconds away from drowning. If someone throws me a raft, I'm grabbing onto it and I'll worry about pride, stigma or what others think later. Had I not done that, I would have literally been in the morgue 9 years ago. I wouldn't have made it. Are there mooches out there, yes. But this situation is a little too severe to blanket everyone as that. If the economy was rolling along, fine I could accept it. but now with all these people who worked hard and are now struggling to make ends meet, I can't hammer them. Only the banks and guys like Madoff. They should be sodomized with spiked baseball bats.

Ricardo: I'll lend a hand to anyone who asks for help out of a place of real need, and I have no shame asking for help when I need it. But not from the Government, who has never in all of its existence, done anything in a helpful manner. Instead, why not support the thousands of wonderfully run private, non-profit charities out there who do good work? We don't NEED the government to help our fellow human beings.
As for your question, how do we work when there isn't any, well, what, exactly IS work? What is wealth? How is it created? Not by the government, but by individual entrepreneurs and companies who innovate, create, produce, market, and distribute. And, as a result, EMPLOY people to help in that work.
But they cannot do so if the government sucks them dry of their abilities, their resources, and their very will to innovate.
That is what this current administration is doing and for that, I can not and will not support their efforts.

Moi - Yes, I am all for the private sector charities who do wonderful work. We need them now more than ever. I also understand that it's the people who make business and jobs happen but at the moment so many of them are imploding. Jobs are scarce and the ranks of the unemployed are going through the roof. It's going to take time for things to get better. I don't know how this stimulus package will pan out or if it will destroy the entrepreneurial spirit. I can tell you that the TARP fund has been a disaster based on what I've seen. The banks just took the money and kept doing what they were doing. They got into this mess by poor business practices and haven't learned. It was not at all the fault of capitalism but rather their inability to understand it and make it work for them. Could that happen with the stimulus plan? Sure could. But I've been bombarded with so much bad news that I'm trying to stay positive.
K9 - Thanks I appreciate that. The lady who was asking for the government to spring for a car and home repairs is looking in the wrong place. I don't know what that was about and I'm not at all for that kind of thing. That's just silly. The other stuff I read you loud and clear on (you've read my horror stories on dealing with the unemployment office) and as a voter and tax payer you should have a say on where the tax dollars go. That's what we do in democracies. But the government is very good in gong around us. We've nationalized the banks and both parities have consistently opted for big government over the years. Republican's do corporate welfare Democrats do social welfare. And sometimes they switch sides to help their friends out.
My fear is that as this situation goes on and the ranks of unemployed swell and jobs get more and more scarce, that people start turning on one another and the out of work people who are trying a best they can to get back on their feet get demonized and alienated. It's going to take a very long time for some to get out of the hole.
Hopefully the the economy will improve sooner than anticipated and people like me can get back to work and have normal lives again. This out of work thing is ruining my pick up game with the chicks K9. that's unacceptable.

I see exactly where you are coming from, Ricardo. But I do follow Moi's logic. Think: do we live in capitalism? No. In fact that all ended with income tax. We began funding the government. Then the government began helping corporate business--sure helping banks meant granting loans and mortgages to small business, but the greed of the banks made loans predatory and the unwanted investment of the electorate--read taxes, became a way for us to just screw each other, all in the name of the American way. What goes on in Washington has NOTHING to do with us, nothing--it is a fiefdom, separate from the people, a monster unto itself. I used to believe differently. But bailout showed me the way and I'm glad to have the scales fall from my eyes.
When you have a government that will do what it wants, regardless of the needs of the people who elected it, defended it with their blood and fund it with their money, then you are in an uneven relationship--Americans have been in Stockholm Syndrome for too long. We identify with the oppressor instead of breaking free.
I'm all for unemployment benefits when I realize that the fuckups of the government who buddied up with the private sector--big no no in capitalism, but it happened anyway--sure, call it a rebate of all the money that has been taken from your check over the years. If you own a business, you pay quarterly and it is interesting to see that the IRS goes after the little guy, the small self-employed contractor instead of the corporate raiders, because people who are in business for themselves on a small scale cannot afford big tax attorneys. It's a bit like the Mafia shaking down the corner grocery for "protection money".
The problem is that nothing is for free. When we take government funds, we sign up to take their shit too. Did you see that two of the banks that were bailouted now want to return their bailout money as they don't like the government in their business? What if the government turns unemployment into a "loan" that you will have to pay back when you get a job? What if they garnish your check with that wish and call it taxes?
John Locke wrote about the state of war. He said that when someone infringes on your natural rights--hurts you or your property, you have the right to kill them. Why? Because if they hurt you and you are your own property, what won't they do to you? How can you trust them? Our constitution is based on John Locke--no Marxism here.
The United States has broken the social contract with the people. It did it ages ago, but the bailout was the last straw. I understand why Obama is doing what he is doing, but there is not enough money in the world and I mean that literally, to jumpstart what we are now facing. Any stimulus will be a bandaid and yes, when I am hurt, I want medical attention, but if my wound is critical, I need more than aspirin.
I am not an economist, but I just know there is a better way. I hope I made myself clear and showed respect.

BTW, those banks might not be able to give the money back to the gov. It's being "reviewed." Taking that money means they have the banks by the balls. I hate banks at the moment so I don't feel sorry for them but in the big picture it could spell bad news.

Let me just add something to what I think Moi is getting at (forgive me, Moi, if I am wrong.) America thrives when business thrives. By business, I mean small business. Who wants to work for someone else when you can work for yourself, own your own labor, own your own production and benefit the community on the local scale. That is what small business does. It keeps things honest. If a small business is corrupt, people don't buy from it and they fail. If a business keeps its word, people buy their products or use their labor and the business florishes and so does the community. This is good and this is what our founding fathers wanted.
Now we have corporations that will lay off the workers before they look at the bloat in their business; they want the tax cuts the government offers, but nothing is for free, because what they don't pay in one kind of tax, they will pay in capital gains or interest from loans from banks. This hurts the idea of business.Corporate business will buy out or kick out small business, then get people to work for 1/10th of what they could have been earning if they could find a way to make their labor turn into profit. Then it begs the question: who is in charge: corporations or the government who helps them in the name of the global economy? Our government helps corporate business because they want them to go to China and open another McDonalds; this means America has a piece of everyone's pie. But the same thing happens in these countries--the worker gets some shit job instead of getting help to sell his labor to benefit himself and his community. This is what I call the global tyranny.
Why can't we cut our foreign aid and give that money to Americans? Do you honestly think our government cares about the starving children in Egypt? No! They want to own Egypt. Nothing is free. Debt is so high in the world that it will never be paid back and I am talking about countries, not citizens.
Even nonprofits aren't off the hook; I worked for one; we depended on state and federal funds. Yes, there were generous donors, but they did not make the place stay afloat, and trust me, that was all we did. The pay sucked, but I liked what I was doing. However, when people give money, be they independent or government, they expect a say in the production. This is why small business is the way--farmers, store owners, artists, carpenters. The more we know how to do with our own hands, the stronger we are.
I want to start a business with a friend and we can't, because we can't get a loan. But the banks got bailout! Hmm. Instead, I wait to see if I will keep my job. That is not right. What if we built our own houses? What if we grew our food? What if we stopped driving and got horses or rode our bikes or walked? No more dependence on Saudi Arabi. We depend on ourselves and our neighbors. That is the America I want.
Sorry for eating up your space, K9. I've seen my brother in law lose two businesses and so I get a little touchy on this one. When he works for someone, he ends up with chest pains. He wants honest labor and he has great ideas. But I saw what Moi described. It is complicated on how business get screwed when the government allows the big fish to swim and the small ones to fry. My brother in law's business served a local community--no Taco Bell is going to France because of him.

i took a contract to help several laid-off employees of a large corporation work through the transition and i found that these people all had a plan to find work elsewhere. these are mbas, cgs and other financial managers that felt the pressure and long before the chop went out and found work elsewhere. some found temporary work locally, but most will have to travel, effecting family and friends...but are willing to do what it takes to survive.
contrasted by a chap in starbucks today that was happy to get free pairs of orthopedic running shoes paid for by his wife`s benefit plan. he is a self-declared socialist who decries the "hegemony" of the republicans, yet he steals from the public purse that his wife`s plan draws from. he himself is on a disability and so personally benefits from the social programs in place to help those in need....though he lives in a house by the lake and drives a new leased car every two years.
and he doesn`t need orthotic shoes. his chiropractor sold them to him knowing he had his wife`s plan.
his buddhism seems to be one of convenience.
and me? well, at the end of each contract i become unemployed until such time as i am refered along.
and i never have to wait long.

Interesting thing to me is how Ayn Rand has meant the very opposite to me than some of your commenters. I don't remember the exact words but she says that it's easier to trust a man who is after your money than one who is after your soul. So IF (big if) I had to have my freedom to follow or not follow a religion, to choose to marry/or not as I please, to have my privacy respected, to have the right to self defence I had to pay a bit more of tax I would.

If it ain't broke don't fix it...if it is broke and out of warranty then I can't expect any fix unless I do it for myself, is this what I am hearing?
Yes the current "fix" ain't nothing that will fit anything. But until we reclaim a base where them not disposed to working for themselves can sell their labor for a reasonable rate of return, meaning affordable food, housing and, education; no fix will work.
My skills and talents never were inclined to work for myself but I gladly lived the middle class life by working my ass off for others. Doing as many jobs as it took to give my family what they needed and in some cases wanted. But if there is no job for me to work at no matter my intent I am still going to starve.
Corporations that manufactured had the right and ability to send those jobs away, which in return removed the affordability factor for most consumers which in turn led to that same consumer following the model presented to achieve affordability...a debt financed economy.
So now what do we have...massive government intervention trying to save a system that is a proven failure...and them just on the brink of destruction decrying the needs for food and shelter for them who have already gone off the cliff.
Quite the conundrum eh? Capitalism sent the means of earning over seas, finance took advantage of lax regulations and ate them who only wanted the dream. I don't fault those who wanted better, the financial community got greedy and showed the poor a way to have a house (short term ARM) for less than the cost of rent. How many truly logical people do you know? A few dozen, hundreds out of millions. I know more who followed their dream than the fear that should have been presented to them at the closing table (and never was).
Regardless of all that has come before this moment I think it time to make all the necessary changes, be it corporate bankruptcies (GM, Chrysler et al), financial's under heavy heavy regulation, credit card companies capped at no more than 10% interest (which today allows a seven percent profit margin) and for Gods sake a rejection of a 3.5 trillion dollar budget.
Hold in abeyance all foreclosures reverting title of the house to the bank and setting rent control in place that is proportionate to the ability to pay. Banks may in fact make good property managers in it falls in line with an area they should be expert in, financial management.
It is only after all of the carnage is over, that the battlefield can be cleaned up and no matter how bad we wish we had not worked so diligently for a one world economy we, all of the worlds governments, created it.
If we let it all crash now, let all the blood flow that has and is about to...then at least our children will have a couple of hundred years worth of work in the rebuilding of it.
I may not be clear in my thinking about all this but then I haven't heard anyone who is clear except for them who are clearly angry. Anger is like shit...ain't good for much except getting it out.
The one thing I have not been able to get a handle on is ..why is deflation a bad thing for the consumer?
