trout, vermeer, van eyck, moi and /t (mute monday redux)

me and trout in the "virgin" bedroom.

Yesterday, during the mute monday meme which was "all about me" i posted a series of self portraits. what remains is the best of the lot. /t, the code poet said this mirror image reminded him of a Vermeer painting, particularly this one below: the "Music Lesson".
but when i read /t's comment, i totally went to the Van Eyck painting below; the "Arnolfini Wedding". this painting flashed up in my mind because of the mirror and the chandelier. moi at "bite the apple" caught what i meant! now that i examine the Van Eyck, i see many similarities between the two!
what is reflected in the mirror? the painter of course. and in the mirror's frame, are 10 scenes from the life of Christ. interesting that a dog is included in the Van Eyck as a symbol of fidelity. i like to use dogs as a metaphor for God since they share the same letters. In Dog We Trust.

about that painting reflected in the mirror in the virgin bedroom photo; it is the "creator's handmaiden", a portrait of beloved Eva the wonder lab. the title is a nesting doll of meaning, the dog my handmaiden, and me, the Creators. when you read that Man is created in God's image, i think of creativity, not physical attributes. i truly believe that creativity will be our salvation and is our highest calling. and that applies to all endeavors from the arts to raising children to gardening to governance.

soon i will immortalize trout in a painting but she is still young and i dont have her "icon" image yet. as for the self portrait i was working on, it's horrible. i will have to start again. posting this painting of mine on the same page as a Vermeer and a Van Eyck is all the ego check i will need for today. grrrherhahahahahahaha

the virgin room image
is like a scene from a hitchcock movie (the best) -- i mean, like a set, something he would have shot with the image in the mirror in the room in the photo... awesome!

ok, so you might have said,
the virgin room image is reminiscent of a vermeer in its formality, use of a mirror, and that chandelier

ok ok...you missed the memo
(what memo?)

when y'wander over to grabbing the bull, up at the top right y'all see "when the tv's broken"
and if y'go on in, you'll see:
A dog babysitting a kid
a robot babysitting a dog
and, if I get over there fast enough, a red state update.

Great and fitting, indeed. If I like the painting a lot, and I probably will, I'll nominate you as PATRON SAINT OF TROLLS.

Shockingly, trolls don't currently have a designated saint.

That's awesome! Love the mask! Love the Bracelet, very pretty. Love trout as always. Every time I see another dog, I'm like "My aunt has the cooolest dog ever." How are the chickens? Still enjoying PB? The coat is super super cute. Oh and that bed is the most comfortable bed ever. I was trying to figure out how to steal it on the plain.

AB's right about the cowboy hat. Luv it. You and Ms Seattle definitely proved yourselves Cowgirl Homies today!

Also luv the Trout photo. But is it the virgin bedroom or the Virgin bedroom? The photo reminds me for some reason of van Eyck's "Arnolfini Marriage." Only Trout don't need no husband.

ok,
between
she and moi
i think i get it now...

pregnancy?!?... per the jan van eyck work (good catch moi) with formal arrangement, check, mirror, check (arguably one of the most famous 'mirror' images ever), and that beautiful chandelier, check -- this painting is a masterpiece!

i was thinking more of vermeer's tightly composed (tho beautiful) domestic interiors, specifically, the music lesson where a mirror plays a crucial role to 'identify' the girl whose back is to the viewer, and art of painting with the chandelier above all

ok... sorry... we return you now to your regularly scheduled blogging :)

You skilfully managed to hide the most important part of your face....your eyes....but you can't hide your gorgeousness no matter how hard you try.

Trout is so adorable and that bedroom appeals to my romantic VIRGIN heart.

Wonderful MM She and can't wait to see the self portrait painting. It's not going to be a goat or something is it because I'd love to see the real you.

but
i liked your
original post, too!

and, thank you, mrs torrance :)

can see what you're seeing in the van eyck, though it's more an abstract connection, i think -- more conceptual and symbolic than visual

i still say the virgin room looks more like the vermeer than the van eyck, both compositionally (almost identical) and color palette(!)

but whichever way we choose to view it, your virgin room is a beautiful image -- a classic!

This is the very thing that's so wonderful about you- I feel like there's a whole universe of stuff inside your tiny person- behind those eyes you hide so well. From your message about creativity (dead on, and mind opening) to the images you showed us... Anon Boxer was right- you've given us more to think about here than I can digest in a week!
Kudos to you! :)

Did you ever notice that most of the men in Vermeer paintings are lewdly looking at the women? Love him, and love this post.

Can I doggysit Trout sometime???

Funny. I always notice mirrors in real life, but missed it in the painting. I can see why /t was drawn to the first painting, because the colors and the tone are reminiscent.

I like your dog metaphor. Kinda gives the phrase 'in the doghouse' a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

Blogger sparringK9 said...

to all:

/t's right of course. the vermeer is dead on the same composition...the piano=bed; the table with a rug over it=trout;the mirror=the mirror; the woman=the poster.

nicely done /t!

xdell: i like that! the doghouse.

thursday: no i didnt!! grrrerhahaha i'll have to look into this. good to see you out and about!

Wow. Well, as for finding a picture from history that resembles this?
Two sort'a come to mind.
One, I think is called Grande Odilesque (sp?) not for the nude, but rather, for the dog on the bed with her.
The second more because of the girl up front. She's covering her face (sound familiar?) and there's a dog in the background... It's called "No Swimming" by Norman Rockwell.
Since she isn't nude, I'll go with that.
And, as there are TWO "No Swimming" pictures by Rockwell, I posted the one I'm talking about at the bottom of my new post.

I forgot why the other reason was to come over... I think I already told you the cute dogs are in "broken tv, on the top of the sidebar....
Well, I'll remember in a moment....

Well, I'm glad to see my degree in Art History can, on occasion, be put to good use :o)

Seriously, though, to me, nothing is more interesting than looking at and talking about art.

As for dogs. Yes. The only creature other than our own kind which whom we have formed not only a working bond, but a truly companionable one as well.

In the painting, Jan van Eyck's 'The Betrothal', Giovanni Arnolfini's bride Jeanne de Chenary is actually not pregnant, her dress is very much the fashion of the upper class with many folds of material at the front which she is holding to display her high status.

I like the photo of your luxurious 'Virgin Bedroom', it looks very inviting.

Honestly, what is the deal with the "Arnolfini Wedding"?

The bride is obviously pregnant, and the groom is totally ripping off Jamiroquai.
